NUTRITION SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITY




COURSE INFORMATION

This education unit has been developed for all nurses working in the community e.g. in nursing homes or as district nurses or practice nurses.

This education unit currently has two stages.

  • Stage 1 - distance learning CDROM includes the functions and dietary sources of macronutrients and micronutrients and the current recommended requirements; key processes involved in the digestion and absorption of nutrients; risk factors for malnutrition in the community; the consequences of malnutrition for individuals and the health service; the concepts of nutrition for public health and nutrition as treatment. It requires about 15 hours of study.
  • Stage 2 - locally delivered workshop that aims to develop your knowledge of malnutrition and its management. You'll receive hands-on training in the use of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) and there'll be discussion of some case studies. You'll have the opportunity to find out more about nutrition support, including the use of nutritional supplements. The workshop lasts about two hours and there is a follow-up activity lasting about an hour.
