This education unit has been developed for all nurses and midwives working in secondary care, except those caring for neonates.
This education unit currently has two stages.

Stage 1 - distance learning CDROM includes epidemiological data related to deep vein thrombosis; pathophysiological changes associated with the development of a deep vein thrombosis and the possible outcomes for the patient; important components of models designed to assess the risk of deep vein thrombosis; mode of action of different interventions to prevent deep vein thrombosis. It requires about 15 hours of study.
Stage 2 - locally delivered workshop that involves watching a DVD and finding out how to measure and fit patients for graduated compression stockings and how to use intermittent pneumatic compression devices, including a foot pump. There'll also be case histories to discuss. The workshop lasts about two hours and there is a follow-up activity lasting about an hour.
