PREVENTING DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS: SAVING LIVES




COURSE INFORMATION

This education unit has been developed for all nurses and midwives working in secondary care, except those caring for neonates.

This education unit currently has two stages.

  • Stage 1 - distance learning CDROM includes epidemiological data related to deep vein thrombosis; pathophysiological changes associated with the development of a deep vein thrombosis and the possible outcomes for the patient; important components of models designed to assess the risk of deep vein thrombosis; mode of action of different interventions to prevent deep vein thrombosis. It requires about 15 hours of study.
  • Stage 2 - locally delivered workshop that involves watching a DVD and finding out how to measure and fit patients for graduated compression stockings and how to use intermittent pneumatic compression devices, including a foot pump. There'll also be case histories to discuss. The workshop lasts about two hours and there is a follow-up activity lasting about an hour.
